News„ Gombrowicz front and back”

2014-10-20
Gombrowicz front, back, aside, from a distance and up close. Under the aegis and with the participation of Rita Gombrowicz. Nearly 60 participants from nine countries, 50 lectures, two debates and plenty of opportunity to talk. The three- day scientific conference (from 20 to 22 October) in Wsola and Radom will be hosted by: Witold Gombrowicz Museum in Wsola (a branch of the Warsaw Museum of Literature) and Kazimierz Pulaski University of Technology and Humanities in Radom. The conference was prepared in cooperation with Jan Kochanowski Theatre in Radom, which is organising at the same time the International Gombrowicz Festival.

Ten years have already passed since the last major Gombrowicz conference organized in Poland (by Jagiellonian University), so meeting in Wsola and Radom will be a good opportunity to scientific re-overview of the work of Witold Gombrowicz and intergenerational conversation about the author of „Cosmos”. The conference will be started by the Gombrowicz Panel, the cyclic event organized by the Witold Gombrowicz Museum, entitled: What Gombrowicz after „Kronos”? The moderator of the discussion will be Prof. Jerzy Jarzębski (UJ), and the participants of the discussion will be: Rita Gombrowicz, Anders Bodegård, and the professors Aleksander Fiut (UJ), Andrzej S. Kowalczyk (UW), and Józef Olejniczak (UŚ). On the last day of the conference the discussion about the book of Łukasz Tischner (UJ) Gombrowicz’s silence of God will be held by Maciej Nowak (KUL).

Somehow provocative title of the conference is certainly a reference to the formly famous book of Karol Zbyszewski „Niemcewicz Front and Back”. The organizers hope that the texts about Gombrowicz, presented in Wsola and Radom, will trigger hot disputes and confirm that Gombrowicz's work is still inspiring and the writer defends himself against fledged classic from school textbooks.

Lectures presented at the conference will be published as a book, while the debate opening the conference, which is also a fifth Gombrowicz Panel organized by Witold Gombrowicz Museum, will be recorded and published on the Internet.
